Civil War Sites

There has been more written about, and there are more web pages about, the Civil War than any other period in US History. The flags at left represent the national flags of the CSA and USA between 1861-1865.

  1. Causes of the Civil War provides an in-depth analysis of the causes of the war using documents, letters, and publications from the time period.
  2. Valley of the Shadow This project at the University of Virginia compares the perceptions of the war in the communities of Staunton, Virginia and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania through newspaper articles, diaries, letters, public records, and more. Both communities are in the Shenandoah Valley, but were on opposite sides in the war.

  4. Selected Civil War Photographs Home Page Over 1000 photographs, mostly by Matthew Brady, of the civil war from the Library of Congress. Descriptions and timeline included.

  6. Civil War An excellent site from a Germantown, Illinois school featuring facts, pictures, and links about the Civil War. Topics include abolition, sectionalism, Civil War trivia, peace, and more.
  7. The History Place - US Civil War 1861-1865 This page has an excellent timeline of the war along with some historic photos and art from the period. All images load as thumbnails so the page loads quickly.
  8. Civil War Poetry and Music Home Page An excellent site for combining the literature and the arts with history. There are words and midi files of many civil war tunes categorized by North and South. A great deal of poetry is also included.
  9. War Hymns Patriotic music was a part of everyone's daily life during the War. Choose a song (in mp3 format) from this site and listen to it.
  10. Music of the American Civil War These General MIDI files are based on The Civil War Songbook: Complete Original Sheet Music for 37 Songs. Text of the lyrics is also included.
  11. Confederate Poetry Writing and listening to poetry, like music was a passtime during the War for many soldiers, slaves and families.

  15. Letters Home from an Iowa Soldier in the U. S. Civil War These are the actual letters written by a company clerk to his friend (and later wife) and parents between October, 1862 and August, 1865.
  16. Civil War Gazette A Webquest lesson. You are a team of newspaper reporters, living in the civil war era. Your team is assigned the task of researching, writing, and editing a single edition of your newspaper that focuses on a specific battle during the civil war.

  20. Black Southerners in the Old South During the fight of the North and South there were several slaves who left their families and belongings to escape to the North for Freedom. This site contains information about slaves who've fled for the North and are now wanted.
  21. Harriett Tubman and the Undergound Railroad Harriett Tubman was a slave who did escape from the South. Read the timeline and poems about her on this site.
