Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award Nominees 1999

The Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award is in it's second year of existence in the State of Oregon. Named for a longtime professor of Education and Children's Literature from Western Oregon State University, the award picks six of the best picture books released the year before and allows the children of the state to vote for their favorite. The votes will be tallied and in April an announcment will be made by the Oregon Reading Association. All students, grade K-5 listened to and enjoyed all the nominated books. The award winning book at Colonel Wright was The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin.

The Rough-Face Girl is an Algonquin Cinderella story. A powerful invisible being will marry the woman who can prove that she's seen him; a poor man's two proud daughters try and fail, but the third, her face and hands scarred from tending the fire, has the understanding to see him everywhere in the world and is lovingly received.
